Be completely honest about your abilities as it relates to your effectiveness as a teacher. It can be tempting to skip over subjects in which you yourself are weak. This will result in your child not getting a well rounded education. If you feel deficient in any area of the core curriculum, consider hiring a tutor or trading off with another homeschooling parent.
There is nearly always something new and valuable to learn for your homeschooling needs. Many online groups feature other homeschoolers. Go on nature walks with your children. You can incorporate many different lessons into your nature walk. Collecting leaves can be a fun experience for younger children. They can check out plants, trees and animals and see which they can name. The older children can do some research on the various species. Allow them to bring a camera so they don't bother mother nature.
If you are in charge of homeschooling the children, your spouse can help by taking charge of other responsibilities. Have your partner pitch in by taking your child to music lessons or throwing in a load of laundry. Don't forget to spend time with your husband or wife as well.
Look into your state's homeschooling laws and procedures. In order to succeed in your efforts, you must abide by the official curriculum and be able to asses your child at regular intervals. You are more likely to run into trouble if you stray too far from the standard curriculum.
For a solid foundation and healthy attitude for you and your child, keep a clear cut distinction between free time and working school time. Once your school day is over, let your child choose their study area. Since the kids are going to be home constantly, you can even plan different field trips to break up the monotony of staying home.
Children who have a hard time in the public school may benefit greatly from home schooling. This will also reduce the amount of stress and anxiety your child is faced with. You will also be able to bond better with your child via homeschooling him or her. Your child will not be able to receive the proper education if they are uncomfortable in a big classroom.
Don't be too focused on academic work. Allow your child breaks to play and let out their pent up energy. This can reduce restlessness and help them stay focused in class. Schedule some breaks and tell them when it's about time for their break.
